"The Organized
Webmaster"

All webmasters have the same on-going challenge - how to
constructively manage the same 24 hours and 7 days we all have
available to us - some seem to be able to do this more
effectively and successfully than others. To manage your time as
a webmaster, requires more self discipline than almost any other
occupation I can think of - why? Simply because to do our job we
are required to use two of the greatest potential time
wasting tools ever invented, the computer and the Internet.
Distractions Unlimited
Unfortunately it's so easy while doing our jobs and looking for
required information to become distracted and find yourself
surfing all over the Internet, absorbed in reading heaps of
wonderful stuff, wasting hours before you even realize it, I do
it, I'm sure we all do it. This then will probably be your
hardest self discipline challenge as a webmaster.
Organizing The Daily Tasks
eMail
Keep your work email address separate from your personal email
address, otherwise you will find yourself wading through joke
emails and sp`am all day. Organize your mail account inbox - deal
with mail as it comes in. Set up a new 'My Web Site Mail' folder
in 'My Documents' with sub folders like 'Reply Req'd' 'Link
Exchange Requests' 'Commissions' etc.
Be sure to forward all mail as it arrives to the appropriate
folder, also make sure you DO respond to inquiries, sales
orders, etc. Answer ALL mail requesting a response, nothing
looks less professional than no answer.
Check Your Website
Make sure you check from time to time during the day, to be
sure you do in fact still have a website. At least once a day
check your previous days website statistics (number of users,
referrers, etc). Identify your competition and visit their
websites, for a bit of industrial spying, and to make sure you
keep up-to-date with the latest developments in your market.
Promote Your Website
If you have any new pages, submit them to the search
engines and directories. Visit any discussion forums you may
subscribe to - these forums can be a great source of information,
and a way to establish yourself as an expert in your field
while attracting additional visitors to your website. I try to
limit my visiting hours to these forums to around an hour as I
find participating in forums can easily become another time
wasting addiction.
Managing Advertising Campaigns
Spend time each day managing and monitoring your advertising
campaigns. This is so important I will cover this subject in a
future article. It doesn't matter which advertising method you
choose and to receive the maximum benefit for your investment,
you should be testing and tracking your results carefully.
Correctly tracking the results of your advertising campaigns
will help you manage your time and save you wasting hours
working with advertising campaigns which often look good, but can
in reality, be a waste of both time and money.
Researching Content
Try to set some time aside each day to devote to researching new
content for your website pages, ezine or articles. I find it a
good idea when I'm planning to add content to a webpage or write
a new article, is to begin a text file in notepad which I open and
minimize at the start of each day. During the day and as ideas
come to me I jot them down in no particular order, after a few
days you will find you have a lot of material you can work with.
The information above should give you some ideas which will help
you manage your day and your time.
Not too hard at all is it? :o)
